Mountain cycling- is when a rider is riding in an area in the Alps or a mountainous region. There are a few forms of mountain cycling. The main three are cross country, downhill and mountain bike orienteering.
Ø Cross country is a mixture of flat terrain, rough terrain, up and down hills and gradual inclines. Cross country
Ø Downhill is a classified as an extreme sport because it’s an intense track covered with ruts, jumps, drops, rock gardens and berms. A downhill track averages between three too ten minutes in length. Downhill requires a large amount of concentration, skill and bravery.
Ø Mountain bike orienteering is similar to cross country. The aim is to get from start to finish and collect markers as you go along, you are given a map at the start of each race showing all the different tracks to get to the markers all tracks have their advantages and disadvantages, some tracks maybe shorter than another one but it will be steeper or more technical.
Recreational cycling- is when you just maybe feel like going for a ride to relax or have a ride with family and friends to just catch up and do something together.
History of the bicycle The world’s first bicycle was created in Germany 1817 by a man by the name of Baron von Drais. He called it the steerable draisienne. It was nearly entirely of wood apart from the seat and chest rest. It didn’t have any chain or pedals. It was repealed by the rider who would be pushing his feet along the ground. One of the most famous bikes of all time is called the Penny Farthing. The Penny Farthing was invented by a Frenchman Eugene Meyer in 1871. The name came from an English penny and a farthing which is a quarter penny. The front wheel stands at 5 feet tall and the rear wheel is only 18 inches. Different types of bikes There are different types of bikes for different types of terrains.
Road bikes are designed to make the rider lean over on the bike by raising the seat above the handle bars which makes the body more aerodynamic and gets maximum power out of the pedals.
Downhill bikes and alot more heavy duty bikes with a fatter frame, tyres, suspension and running gear. The front suspension is angled out more so when you ride over rocks and ruts you don’t flip over the handle bars.
Cross country bikes are a mix between road bikes and cross country bikes. Their seats are raised like road bikes but are heavily framed.
